Special Yin Yoga & Yoga Nidra

Winter Meridians

Seasonal Yoga Class suitable for all levels, in which we will work the Yin and Yang meridians of winter.

The foundations of yin Yoga come from the ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Taoist philosophy.

Yin Yoga is a pasive yoga practice where postures are maintained for a long time, and whose benefits are to improve the fascial tissue, promote joint health and flexibility, mental calmness, self-knowledge, etc.

The characteristics of a Yin Yoga class are phisical and mental stillness, the meditative attitude of mindfulness and conscious breathing.

After the Yin yoga practice, we will continue with a long guided deep relaxation, also called Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep)

Would you like to take these two hours on sunday to take care of yourself, to relax and regenerate?

Next sunday February 17th of 2019 from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

How to Promote Self-Healing During Recovery

Addiction is devastating to physical and mental health. Its sources are complex and can be unique to each individual, though people generally gravitate to addictive possibilities when they are seeking some sort of relief. Those seeking a healthy lifestyle often wonder if it’s possible to produce an alternative that provides better, safer relief than drugs or alcohol. Many people believe that physical fitness can be a gateway to addiction recovery when balanced with self-care and self-healing.

self healing

Brain Benefits of Exercise

Substance abuse and mental health issues are often comorbid; that is, addicts often experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, while depressed and anxious people sometimes turn to dangerous substances for relief. Relief is the end result that distressed people search for through substances. According to medical research, the brain releases the same neurochemicals during exercise as it does when getting high, making it a great tool during recovery. We’ve all heard of runner’s high – that feeling of euphoria triggered in small amounts by exercise. However, this feeling can be life-defining for marathon and elite runners. When we seek the euphoria of fitness, we substitute a good habit for a bad one. And when the workout high wears off, we are not hungover; rather, our bodies are fortified. After some rest, we are ready to run or lift weights again, and the next high may even be better than the last one, but it’s important not to overdo it.

Self-Care and Emotional Well-Being

In order for exercise to be a sustained component of our lives, we need to be aware of the potential for burnout. If we try to exercise too hard, with unreasonable fitness goals in our mind, we will fail and fall back to bad habits. Self-care is one key way to keep our fitness regimens in check. Self-care encompasses all actions that we take to provide comfort and support our healthy lifestyle choices. The following are examples of self-care:

  • Rest: Exercise is only effective when you give yourself rest days to recover and rebuild. Muscles can be overworked and injured if we fail to properly rest, and muscle building does not occur during workouts, but afterwards when we are healing.
  • Massage: Sore muscles can benefit from sports massage, and our emotional well-being thrives when we occasionally pamper ourselves.
  • Healthy life-work balance: Both are equally important in life, but situations may occasionally thrust one ahead of the other. Self-care ensures that we know how to balance these two main components of life.

Self-care enables us to maintain a balanced life that has ample room for fitness. In this life balance, healthy habits take root in the spaces vacated by poor health, bad diet, drinking, and drugs. Sustainable lifestyle change is the key to overcoming substance abuse, according to addiction professionals. And when we tend to our comfort, we are more likely to pursue things that might challenge us, such as reaching fitness goals. Recovery experts liken the first steps of recovery to combining pain with hope. Self-care goes a long way in alleviating that pain, and the exhilaration of exercise, combined with positive outlooks that result from avoiding substances, results in hope.

Humans are uniquely wired to seek pleasure and reward. While some understandably seek both in drugs and alcohol, these feelings can be found when we go in the opposite direction, toward health. Through self-care, positive momentum toward successful recovery can be sustained. And, since holistic health is the overall goal, self-care requires moderation in exercise, so as to avoid burnout and maintain progress.

Accomodation

Casa Rural Retiro Yoga

You will stay in a rural (or rustic) house surrounded by nature. The house is located on a farm at 1000 meters above the sea level, in the Adeje mountain, close to Taucho and the natural park of Los Picos de Adeje. It is located in a protected natural area.

It has sea and mountain views and is completely isolated, perfect for this spiritual retreat where you will find the peace and tranquility that you are looking for and where you will be able to connect with the present moment.

The house is built entirely of stone and wood. It is simple and basic but you will find everything you need for this yoga retreat.

It has a living room, 3 bedrooms with 2-3 beds in each room, 2 shared bathrooms, kitchen and another living room with a fireplace.

There is a garden where we will do the yoga classes and enjoy the views of the sea and the mountains.

The garden features hammocks, deck chairs, a barbecue, and a large table for 12-14 people in covered area, where we will enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At the porch situated in the garden you will be able to enjoy superb views over the south coast of Tenerife. Here you will delight in the beautiful sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean or behind the nearby island of La Gomera. At night you can enjoy the light of the stars in the wonderful clear skies of the Canary Islands.

In the local area there are several walking routes within the natural landscape, where we will make walking meditations.

Program – Schedule

Sandra yoga and therapies

The program is designed to disconnect you from the outside world and deepen your yoga practice in a spectacular environment. Throughout the retreat you will be close to the natural world of Tenerife creating a deeper connection with nature.

The program may vary according to the group. All activities are optional. To get the most out of your stay, we recommend that you participate in all scheduled activities.

No previous experience is needed. The classes will be adapted to the level and physical condition of each person.

The morning yoga classes will be more dynamic (Hatha Yoga Flow) to energize the body and start the day with renewed energy. Pranayama techniques will also be explored.

The afternoon yoga classes will be focused on the Back bending, Strengthening and Flexibility.

We will go out twice to the beach. One time to practice Yoga on the beach and to feel the difference when practicing yoga on the sand and listening the sound of the sea in the background.

The second time a bit more challenging and fun will be for you to experience SUP Yoga, yoga on the sea, on stand-up paddleboards.

Every day is going to be different.

We encourage you to participate in Karma Yoga (yoga of the action – selfless service) by helping in simple tasks in the house for an hour or less a day, during the 4 full days. Yoga traditionally acknowledges that volunteering time helps one to feel closer to the spiritual mission and the retreat is a perfect place to participate with other like-minded people.

The walks through nature will be Active Meditations in silence. This will allow us to concentrate on each step and each breath we take and being counscious of both, opening senses and developing mindfulness.

The retreat starts on June, Saturday 17th, with the check in from 17h and it will finish on Thursday 22nd at 12h, after the breakfast and group talk.

The secret to be happier

If we try to analize our daily thoughts we will realize that, in general, we use to think too much about what goes wrong and not enough about what goes right in our life. We use to focus our mind in our worries, concerns, situations and obsessions,… and that is not good for ourselves.

If we think more about what has gone well and we are grateful for that, then we will be happier and healthier and more good things will come to our life. And all this is about the power of gratitud.

From my point of view, this is connected with yoga in some way. According to the ancient yoga text: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the 8 limbs of yoga described by him, Santosha is the second of the Niyamas (self-observances) of Patanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga. The meanning of Santosha is contentment, gratitude. It is about finding acceptance, appreciation and happiness with what we have and with what we don’t have, with what we are, and with people who are around us, enjoying every moment of our life, enjoying everything we do and everything we have.

Santosha Tenerife

“What you appreciate, appreciates”

When you appreciate something, then more of that flows in to your life.

If you want to increase nice and beautiful things happenning in your life writte a gratitude diary. Every night take 5 minutes before you go to sleep and writte down at least 5 things that happenned during the day and you are grateful for.

If we do that we will feel happier and our happiness will last because experiencing gratitud is like sending love to the universe. When we live in gratitud we are opening our heart, and that love we send out, will come back to us many times over, creatting abundance, attracting people, ideas and events that will enrich our life,

Namasté,

Sandra
